Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year ~
A couple of months ago, I was driving in Los Angeles from an exit in Beverly Hills to Sunset, and got stuck in terrible traffic for over an hour, when it shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes. Nearing the core of the congestion, I saw a white big rig, a grey SUV with a female driver, a red Ducati and that’s when I saw a body stretched, right there on the ground, partially covered with a tarp. It’s rather funny how the mind can capture such details in just a moment of passing by. The red Ducati was a symbol of his love for life & expensive toys. For weeks after that I couldn’t shake the image of a tall, large built body lying there, so lifeless. I wondered if he knew he’d die when he got on that freeway or if his loved ones or friends did, when he bid them good bye that morning.
Shortly after that I left for a long vacation, where I saw my family, slept for hours, ate carbs and sugar laden treats and sat up talking to my siblings till 5am, waiting for the birds. And yes that was so special, I actually heard birds and not cars or sirens. Later, I took off to Istanbul, Turkey just cause I felt like it. With the image of the accident still in my mind, I made a conscious decision to take my time to talk to the people I love, to eat something cause I wanted to, to sit and enjoy a cup of tea, instead of rushing out of the house in the morning with the mug dripping. And most importantly to REALIZE what’s important to me . . . . And that is to be surrounded by love at all times, to do things that matter, to use my architecturally driven brain to make a difference in the world.
At this time of the year, when we are surrounded by love and good fortune, I encourage you to remember the fragility of life, to hold the people around you tight, to remember that in some parts of the world child birth still kills women, to know that the life span some where else is about 45 years, that Malaria (forget AIDS) still exists and can kill a child, to acknowledge that some people struggle to find water and food. Think about where our planet is, and the impact of our choices on its health, because beyond the boundaries, the politics that’s our home. Be mindful of your consumption and where it ends up and the resources that we use. At 2009 rates of oil demand 1,354 billion barrels is enough for a little over 44 years, so we will see the impact in our lifetime.
Here I am introducing some of the charities that I support and am a huge fan of, feel free to contribute, if their cause touches your heart.
Roots of Peace – Working to De-mine fertile land in war torn countries, putting farmers back to work.
Care – Working to alleviate poverty and empowering women.
Rotary – Working to eradicate polio, amongst other things.

And most importantly have a very happy, healthy holiday season and the most wonderful new year!
